Mt. Rainier Flora -- Athyrium alpestre -- (Alpine Lady Fern)

Athyrium alpestre

Fairly common above 5,000 feet on rocks and moraines, this is a rounded fern with bright green fronds. The blades are wider at the middle, and the leaf stalk has scales near the base.

Athyrium alpestre

The sori are round, and the fronds can reach three foot in length, although in harsh habitat they are much smaller. This fern was formerly known as Athyrium americanum.
