Mt. Rainier Flora -- Carex mertensii -- (Merten's Sedge)

presented by Susan McDougall

Carex mertensii

Often very tall, but sometimes reduced in stature in poor habitat, this is a common middle to high elevation sedge; here it is seen growing on a rocky site near the Nisqually River. The plants have flat leaves, tall stems, and large flowering heads composed of 5-8 spikes.
