Here is a rare mutant form of this common subalpine species. The petals and stems are pale, and some of the flowers have not fully developed.

The normal form of this shooting star shows a plant with basal leaves and flowering stems that may reach nearly two feet tall.

The five rose-purple petals are sharply reflexed, giving a distinctive appearance to the flower. The leaves are narrowed at the base, oblong, and somewhat stiff.
