The capsules are dark brown and egg-shaped.

The panicle of small flowers nods on long stems. The leaves are thick. Here the plant grows near a trail.

Common in the subalpine region on open, dry sites, this is a tufted woodrush, up to two feet tall but much less in harsher conditions. The stigmas are bright white and the scale-like petals are dark brown.
