Often seen alongside roads at low elevations, small plants are also encountered in the subalpine zone at 7,000 feet or more. At one time, this reduced form was given varietal status. Here a large group grows in rocky, wet habitat near the edge of Box Canyon.

Both ray and disc flowers are borne in flat-topped clusters. The leaves are featherlike.
