Mt. Rainier Flora -- Aconitum columbianum -- (Columbian Monkshood)

presented by Susan McDougall

Aconitum columbianum

The striking large purple flowers, borne in a tall raceme, are an unmistakable field mark for this uncommon Buttercup Family member. The leaves are palmately lobed and six inches wide, and the uppermost large sepal is curved over the rest of the flower like a helmet.
