A plant of moist places in forests, sometimes found on cliffs, this is a lowland to middle elevation species. The color of the bell-shaped flowers distinguishes it.

Several "bells" are spaced along a foot-tall stem. The tips of the petals curve backward, and the basal leaves are grasslike.
