Common in low elevations, often in disturbed areas near forest edges but also in shaded habitat, this evergreen shrub has prickly, palmately-veined leaves. The blue fruits are covered with a white "bloom".

Flowering best in more open habitat, such as the at the edges of lowland forest where this species is most common, the yellow color of the densely clustered flowers brightens the scene.
