Growing on cliffs and slopes, the bell-like bluish-purple flowers of this bluebell are distinctive. Locally common, it grows to elevations of 6,500 feet and is often seen alongside roads and trails.

The basal leaves are rounded and borne on stalks, while the stem leaves are linear and not stalked. The flowers are arranged in a sparse raceme.
