Mt. Rainier Flora -- Carex aurea -- (Golden Sedge)

Carex aurea

Not observed since the 1930s this tufted sedge grows in a wet roadside ditch below Chinook Pass. The light green leaves are slender, and the flowering stems are a foot tall or less.

Also known as "Pumpkin Sedge" for the round perigynia (each enclosing one seed); the male flower spike is the short columnar structure.
