Common throughout the Park to elevations of 4,500 feet, this sedge grows on wet ground in open forest. The flowering stems can be up to three feet tall and rise from a slender rootstock.

There are 4-8 spikes on weak stems. The female part (shown maturing in the photo) is at the top of the spike. This is variety deweyana.
