Found in wet habitats in the lower subalpine regions, the flowers of this common Willow-herb are rose-purple with four notched petals and deep red sepals.

The stems are somewhat hairy and the leaves have small teeth. The buds nod on long stems, and the plants are tufted and about six inches in height, although occasionally taller.
