Where found, this unusual plant can be abundant, rising as single stems or from a spreading rootstock.

The leaves are V-shaped and well-developed. The plants are most noticeable when the bristles that aid in seed dispersal create a field of white cottonlike heads. This is subspecies angustifolium.
