The brilliant color of this Monkeyflower brightens stream and river beds, and other moist habitats, typically above 5,000 feet where it may flower late in the summer. Formerly named Mimulus lewisii, it has been placed in the Phrymaceae Family.

The plants can be very vigorous, as shown in this photo of a large clump growing in the bed of the White River near the campground. The leaves and stems are sticky with long hairs.
