Mt. Rainier Flora -- Heterocodon rariflorum -- (Western Pearlflower)

presented by Susan McDougall

Heterocodon rariflorum

Known from one location along the Stevens Canyon road, this sprawling plant grows with Brewer's Monkeyflower. The flowers on the lower stems often fail to develop, as shown in the photo. When they appear, the flowers are small, blue bells.

The small flower in the middle is Brewer's Monkeyflower. Western Pearlflower is an annual with lax stems, and alternate leaves that are sharply toothed. It is more typically found east of the Cascades.
