The white "bloom" covers a dark berry and helps to confirm the identity of Common Juniper. It belongs to the same family as the immense Western Red-cedar. This is variety montana.

Quite common although often not observed on rocky slopes and ridges, this ground-hugging juniper is found from low elevations to over 7,000 feet.
