Very common in subalpine meadows and dry slopes, and often behaving nearly as a disturbance species, the flowers of this Rose Family member are borne in compact racemes.

As the photo shows, the plants can form large mats, growing from creeping, woody stems. The leaves remain green through the winter.

Several seeds are densely packed in follicles.
