One of the earliest plants to flower in the spring, the tall, yellow spathes are an unmistakable field mark. It grows in wet places in lowland forests.

The odoriferous flowers are borne along a central conelike structure, the spadix. The leaves emerge after flowering and continue to expand. Large colonies of this colorful plant are sometimes seen.
