The round fruits are speckled when immature, becoming red with age.

Maianthemum dilatatum

Found in forest edges, and other open habitats, including roadsides, this is a common species below about 4,000 feet. The heart-shaped leaves are borne on long stalks. The flowers have four petals, unusual for a lily.
