The petals are small, but the panicles of flowers very showy. They mature to a red berry. The stems can be more than 3 feet in height.

Most easily seen at Stevens Canyon below Reflection Lakes, where it grows in large groups, this is a middle elevation perennial, found on slopes and forest openings. The leaves are oval and clasp the stems.
