The purplish bracts show beneath unopened flowers in this photo. The leaves are lancelike or oval and hairy.

Found in open, rocky sites, this is an uncommon species at the Park, apparently restricted to the east side where it grows between 5,000 and 7,000 feet.

In this photo, a bee probes a fully opened flower. The flowers have five united two upper petals and three lower that are long and slender; they are crowded into a ball-like head of 20 or more.
