Resembling a Penstemon but placed in its own genus, this is a species of low to subalpine elevations. It is often seen in shaded places, as well as openings on banks or along roads. The flowers are blue-purple, tubular and 2-lipped.
The lancelike leaves are borne opposite and are toothed. The inflorescence is a tall panicle, and the plants may be more than two feet tall.
