The tiny flowers are maroon to reddish and borne in small clusters in the leaf axils. There are 4 sepals and 4 petals.

With an appearance much like a fine garden shrub, this evergreen plant grows in dryish, open sites from middle to subalpine elevations. The small leaves are toothed above the midpoint.
