As the flowers age, they turn white. It is not unusual to encounter a few plants with blossoms late in the season. This is variety longistylis.

Low and spreading, this is a common subalpine plant which, when in bloom, is very showy. The flowers are solitary and transform from bluish to pink as they open.

When in flower, Spreading Phlox is hard to miss. It grows alongside roads in large groups, and the flowers are unmistakable.
