The flowers are borne in a dense upright inflorescence. This is subspecies secunda.

Common on dry, rocky ground in the subalpine, here this grass grows below 3,000 feet in the Nisqually River bed at Longmire. Seeds may have been carried downstream during a relatively recent flood.
