The inflorescence is composed of erect branches and greenish to purplish spikelets.

Typically found at elevations from 5,000 to 7,000 feet, this is a tufted plant with flat to folded, short leaf blades. Here a small specimen grows at an elevation of nearly 7,400 feet within the shelter of large rocks.
