This is a species of open forests on rocky slopes from middle elevations to timberline.

The sori are closely packed on the slender fronds of this uncommon fern.

Polystichum lonchitis

The fronds are less than 3 inches wide with uneven, spiny teeth. (This frond is "upside down": that is, the crown from which it arises is above, on a steep bank.)
