The leaves are oval with a pointed tip, and the trees are broad at the top. The common name is derived from the female catkins which are "cottony" and disperse alongside roads and rivers in mid-spring.

The tallest deciduous tree at the Park, Black Cottonwood is most common in the major river valleys at the Park. It also grows at higher elevations, and a population is thriving alongside the Stevens Canyon road.
