The leaves are lancelike and opposite, and the blue-violet flowers are arranged in a dense spikelike head. The petals are two-lipped and lobed. This is the native variety lanceolata.

Frequent in meadows where it may form large clumps, the stalks of purple flowers barely rising above the grasses, this species also grows alongside roads and other disturbed habitats.
