A common, robust fern with tall stems and bright green fronds, Northern Bracken is primarily a lowland species. It is often seen alongside roads and trails, and other disturbed sites.

The triangular blades are pinnately divided three times, and the fronds arise directly from the rootstock. This is variety pubescens.
