The inflorescence is a drooping raceme. The sepals are larger than the petals and are white, spotted with reddish dots; the petals are club-shaped and red. The berry is black with a whitish "bloom".

The maplelike leaves of this shrub have 5-7 wide lobes; they are toothed and deciduous. It is a common currant, growing from middle elevations to treeline.
