The leaves are rounded, shiny, dark green above and glaucous below. The ripening catkins are borne on short, stout stems.

Tiny (two inches or so) and nestled among rocks at high elevations, this subalpine may go unnoticed as a willow at all. It typically grows above 6,500 feet in very harsh conditions.
