Mt. Rainier Flora -- Sambucus nigra -- (Blue Elderberry)

presented by Susan McDougall

Sambucus nigra

Scarce at the Park, Blue Elderberry is most easily recognized by the flat-topped clusters of white flowers. The stems are often bowed, and the leaves are pinnately divided. The berries are bluish-black, unlike the more common Red Elderberry which has long clusters of red berries. This is subspecies caerulea.
