Locally common in subalpine meadows to elevations of 7,000 feet, this small starwort may go unobserved among the grasses of its streamside habitat.

The flowers are borne in a small cyme or sometimes solitary. Petals are frequently absent. The showy part of the small flower is the sepals. The upper stems have short hairs.
