Up to six feet tall, this cattail is a plant of wet habitat, such as along ponds and marshy areas where it can form dense stands.

The female part of the spike is dark brown, eight inches tall, and thick. The male flowers are pale and borne above the female.

Here the seeds are dispersing from a large colony in the Longmire Meadow.
