Sometimes called "Corn Lilies" for the supposed resemblance to corn stalks, this common subalpine meadow plant stands above the surrounding vegetation; early in the season it is recognizable by the large leaves opening near the ground.

Unlike the California False-Hellebore, the lower branches of the panicle droop. The flowers are green with dark veins and a green spot at the center. This is variety eschscholzianum.
